With all the different voices out there in the world, it may be hard to differentiate what right and wrong. Because of this problem, many people think that Modern home décor styling and Contemporary home décor are the same. I am here to clear this confusion and help you understand that they are not the same. They both have their beginnings and their main design features.

Modern Design

The modern design started way back in the 1800s with a German design school. It really became popular in the 1920s and onward. It's easiest to remember that it is based on lot on the art movement called modernism. It is much simpler and cleaner than its predecessors, the Gothic and Victorian styles.

Modern design uses a lot of straight clean lines. Plywood was a popular wood of choice because of its simple focus. It also focuses on natural or neutral colors. These were meant to be cozy and not stand out. Yet, sometimes bold colors were used as accents, like throw pillows or a lamp, to give some color to the room. The furniture was usually made with long legs that held the furniture, sofas, and chairs, off the ground. This created an airy, open feel to the room.

The design centered on the use of metal, or plain colored wood. In many furniture pieces, you can find exposed, polished metal or natural looking wood compliments. The main idea was to reduce clutter and open up the feel of the house with simple colors, lines, and hardware. The modern design is still popular today with many people.

Contemporary Design

The word contemporary means “belonging to or occurring in the present.” Meaning that contemporary design is what is being created right now. Contemporary design is ever changing, in five years what is considered contemporary will probably differ from today's standards. The design is meant to reflect what people want now, what is being created or produced now in today's time.

Many times contemporary design can incorporate different styles. Modern design is sometimes used in contemporary design because of its clean lines, which is a central point to contemporary design. So just because a part of modern design may be used in a contemporary design, does not mean they are the same. Many times contemporary design fluctuates from one end of the color spectrum to the other all in the same room, while doing the same with furniture.

Just remember that modern design is what some would see as old, or maybe even vintage. While the contemporary design is what is in the now. It is occurring right now, and always will be. Now that you know the differences between modern design and contemporary design you can have fun noting the differences and maybe even trying out a little bit of both in your own house.

If it's still not super clear to you, do not worry about it. Just decorate how you like and let everyone fight over who is right with their opinion of the two designs. If you would like to know more, stay tuned for more articles on design styles or go and do some more research to become a master at home design styles.

When to Save or Splurge When Redecorating Your Home

When you plan to redecorate your home, you have to familiarize yourself with the principle of save and splurge. When you plan to redecorate your home, you have to familiarize yourself with the principle of save and splurge. This principle simply means that if you splurge on one item, you have to save on another so you will not break your budget. You may think that choosing inexpensive materials will ruin the look of your home, but if you compensate that with an expensive item that takes all the attention, then your inexpensive item will not be very noticeable. So which items should you splurge on and which ones should you save on? Here are some ideas.

Splurge: Light fixtures

A beautiful light fixture like a chandelier or a pendant light will attract the eyes and set the impression that your visitors will have on your home. In fact a good chandelier will draw attention away from your inexpensive items so they will not be noticeable. Whether you choose a classical look or a modernist look, a chandelier or a hanging light fixture will set the tone. For this reason, light fixtures are worth splurging on.

Save: Tables

Do you really need expensive beautiful tables? No. The fact is, dining tables are usually covered by something-plates, table cloth, and other stuff. So buying expensive tables is really just a waste of money. If you have a gorgeous chandelier above your table, then that chandelier will take all the attention. So when it comes to dining tables, save your money by buying inexpensive but sturdy ones.

Splurge: Energy-efficient appliances

Modern homes have modern appliances, whether it is for cooking, entertainment, heating, cooling, or washing laundry. You have many choices when it comes to appliances, but if you buy ridiculously cheap ones because you want to save money, then you are wrong. Many cheap appliances are electric gluttons, they use too much electricity that you end up paying more in your electric bills because of them. Worst of all, cheap appliances easily get broken and you may have to spend more on repairs. Splurge on high quality appliances which are more energy-efficient and are durable and you will save more money in the long run.

Save: Furniture

Furniture does not have to be expensive, but they do need to be strong. If the high price of furniture is because of its design or because of its brand name, then you are wasting money if you buy it.

Furniture such as shelves, TV rack, computer table and others like them are usually not seen in all their splendor because they are usually covered by the things you place in them. No one will look at your TV area and appreciate the TV rack instead of the TV itself. However, furniture like couches do need to be a bit expensive because they are huge and easily seen.

These are just examples of items that you can splurge or save on when you decorate your home. The key to knowing whether to save or splurge on something is how visible they are to you and the people who come to your home. Those which are visible should be splurged on and those which are usually covered by stuff can be inexpensive.

Becoming an Urban Pioneer

Urban pioneering is taking the best ex-industrial spaces and products to create unique, distinct homes that reflect the marrying of the old and new, while protecting and utilizing the integrity of both. An urban pioneer looks for large empty buildings or spaces, to convert for their home or business while keeping the original elements that are safe, visually appealing, useful, and just plain fun. Many people are jumping on the industrial or urban style band wagon and are really enjoying the experience as well as their new space.

With the decline in manufacturing in the 1950's and 60's, empty warehouses, schools, factories, and office and retail spaces opened up the opportunity for cheap rentals. These spaces allowed for the first true urban pioneers to establish an imaginative and trendy style that is still alive and growing. By keeping the exposed brick walls, and wood or concrete floors, as well as the duct work and pipes that were left in the buildings, people began creating useful and inviting spaces. Since many of the building were equipped with large windows and lots of them, there was no shortage of light to flood the rooms, which was just another bonus, in some cases.

Although renovating an old building can be daunting and expensive nowdays, it can be well worth the effort. Breathing new life into previously unused buildings is not only good for the building, it brings a sense of uplifting pleasure to those who live and visit the home or business. It renews the neighborhood and the people who live there, adding beauty and style. It allows the owner and designer to keep a bit of historical architecture while using new processes to preserve them. It can even add new revenue to the neighborhood by adding a bar, nightclub, restaurant, or even rental venue for weddings and such. The opportunities are endless for these vacant buildings. Of course, planning and design are an important first step. You should know ahead of time just where any wall or plumbing will have to be placed for kitchen and bathroom fixtures, and you'll want to try to keep as much of the existing details and elements of the original building to stay true to the industrial / urban feel.

The style has led to the manufacturing and reproduction of industrial pieces that were popular in this bygone era. From lighting, to seating, to dining tables and accessories, there are a plethora of products that will look great with almost any decorating style. You can find fun pieces to incorporate into your home by looking for reproductions or shop the salvage and junk yards, garage sales, and flea markets for a special piece. An aged and worn look is what makes these pieces stand out and adds character and charm to any home when placed in just the right spot. Searching is half the fun, but the finished look of the room is what will grab the eyes, so search for pieces that speak to you about the industrial times.

In today's internet world, you can find people who will refurbish old finds or create new pieces to match old ones such as wall or ceiling tiles. Metal staircases, doors and pulley systems left in old buildings make a great addition to these spaces. Keeping everyone safe by removing lead paint and asbestos is certainly a priority and you should always have the property checked before making a purchase or renting one out. Needless to say, you will also have to apply for permission to change it to residential use if need be.

We understand that the industrial style is not for everyone. The fact is, most people like the look and feel of something new. Personally, I love holding on to a special aged treasure that reminds me of times gone by. I also really enjoy shopping for creative and imaginative items designed for today's spaces. Whatever your style, I hope you stay open enough to open your home to a bit of the past by seeking out a few urban elements or industrial furniture pieces.

Your home is just a reflection of your own style. It should be considered as a canvas where your ideas take the front seat and you create the picture you like. Every home has a distinct character of its own, therefore the interior designs should be chosen rightly.

The following points should be considered

1. The phase of life: In which phase you are and what you want to reflect through your décor is an important aspect in your interior design. If you are an old couple who has experiences and stories to share – choose a theme that is much relaxed and does the story telling for you. While on the other hand, if you have young children or expecting one soon, your home has to be designed keeping the safety needs of children. If you are a mid-aged couple, you would want your home to look creative with space saving furniture and modern décor items. Therefore, the phase of your life I a deciding factor of the décor you choose.

2. Colors and schemes choice: Your choice in furnishings says a lot about the color and design patterns you like. If you like a classy décor, you are likely to include more and more subtle and deep colors and patterns in the traditional pattern. On the other hand, if you want to give a contemporary twist to your home décor, you will prefer modern design furniture, bright colors and experimenting with unique wall papers. But if you like a mix of traditional and you would probably choose a contemporary decor. Likewise, your taste in furnishings will throw hints at your personal style. Whether it is leather, silk, or velvet furnishings that you buy, it can decide if you want conventional, contemporary or an amalgamated style for your home interiors.

3. Light and actions: How lighted you wanted your space to be is an important consideration in any home décor. The quality and color of the room can affect the appeal of the décor. The type of chandeliers and the bulbs used should complement the décor with its lighting effects. Choose to make your décor look dull or well lighted to highlight the décor details. The best way is to include a mix of task, indirect and general lighting to make the décor look appealing.

4. Color the walls wisely: How you deck up your walls make a statement for your home décor. The colors and the wall art of the home will make the home perfectly in sync with the themes chosen by you. The color yellow and orange are stimulating, white is soothing, purple and wine is royal, red is bold, blue and green are pleasing- therefore choosing the color wisely is very important. The chosen colors complement the theme of the home and make it perfectly co-ordinated.

5. Maintenance of the house and the efforts: Take into consideration the amount of time and efforts you are going to make to keep your décor in the best condition. If you are a working couple and have less or no time to pay attention to the maintenance, opt for a simplistic design that requires less maintenance. Glass top tables, delicate idols and figurines will look their best when clean and dust free so including these in your décor will be time consuming.
