Although they are commonly used in rooms with a rustic or country theme, cowhide rugs also look excellent in modern and elegant areas. If you want to make your home stand out, the many benefits of cowhide rugs make them a fantastic option.

Many Different Decorating Uses

Cowhides have a variety of uses in the home. A large rug can be used as an interesting and eye-catching area rug that feels extremely pleasant to walk on. Cow rugs also make a great focal point when they are put on a wall as a wall hanging. Smaller cowhides create cozy and warm throws that add a country air to a room.

Durable and Long-Lasting

Since cowhide rugs are made of leather, they are extremely durable and tough. The rugs do not easily tear, and the hairs do not shed. Cowhides are designed by nature to protect cows from tough weather and outdoor conditions, so children and dogs can not destroy it. With proper care, a cowhide rug should last long enough to become a treasured heirloom.

Clean and Hypoallergenic

The hairs on a cowhide lie flat against the leather, so the rug will not trap dust and other allergens. The organic curing process ensures that cowhide rugs are not soaked in incompetent chemicals. Since cowhide does not hold onto dust and almost no one is allergic to cows, they are an excellent and hypoallergenic option.

Easy to Take Care of

Vacuuming or brushing your animal skin occasionally will be enough to keep it in perfect condition for years to come. Many owners do not even bother with this, and they just shake it clean outside occasionally. Cowhides are water resistant, so liquids can not soak into the material and stain. Instead, almost all spills on a cowhide can be easily cleaned up with a damp cloth and some mild soap.

Natural Beauty

Each cowhide rug is an individual and unique piece of art. The print on a cow is a one-of-a-kind pattern that is like the cow's fingerprint. Breeds such as the Holstein have beautifully abstract black and white patterns that perfectly accent a modern living room, while the creamy, brown speckles on Longhorn hide's help to create a warm and homey look.

Sopisticated Styles

There are many new sophistication cowhides available from an exotic zebra print to a shiny metallic style. They can also be dyed in a rainbow of many different colors guaranteeing you will be able to find the perfect cowhide for your home decor.

Your Home is Your Castle

At day's end you hoist the drawbridge and bolt the door, shutting out the flaming arrows and dragons of corporate battlefields yet to be conquered. Whether colossal or compact, it is your personal refuge and retreat, each room an individual fortress of protection, renovation and nurture.

There Comes a Time …

Castle home decor need not be set in stone. From moat to mezzanine, pantry to privy, every living space in the manor describes a little decorative Tender Loving Care. Each detail is worthy of attention to ensure the comfort and contentment of m 'Lord and Lady.

… and Here Ends the Medieval Metaphor

Although modern homes may incorporate a deliberate theme of Victorian or Antique, any home can fade into 'comfortable slipper' mode with an aura of Vintage Garage Sale. The occasional rare find in weekend back alley bonanzas is often lost amidst the tired but still-serviceable furnishings left over from days of yore.

New Year – New Look

New Years can be any day of your choice: a birthday, anniversary, promotion, or just … because! But where to start?

A Critical Eye will help you see each room as though for the first time. What is its role in your life? Make note of what you like about the room – and what you do not. Write a list of how you use it, how much of your day is spent in it, and what could make it more inviting. Sometimes renovations (windows, lighting etc.)? Or just a few cosmetic paint and wallpaper treatments? Let your imagination explore every nook and cranny for possibilities without (for the moment) any limiting thoughts of cost.

Repeat this process with each room's furnishings, fixtures and decorative touches. Filtering out any sentimental attachments will quickly identify things which have passed their 'best-by' dates. Of remaining items, which ones do you still enjoy? This sorting process prepares the way for 'out with the old – in with the new'.

Magazines offer a wide array of possibilities, with creative modern designs and configurations – along with costs. Again, be objective about what you see; glossy images do not always transplant successfully!

Showhomes offer touch and texture to design, each furniture grouping especially chosen to highlight the design of the home itself. The relationship between size and space is an important consideration when choosing home decor. When every square inch counts, creative storage spaces in home decor are essential along with multi-functional pieces. Spacious rooms invite Big and Bold in furnishings and accents. Regardless of size, comfort need not be sacrificed for practicality.

You now have the basis for a plan, including a budget and time frame. Will you take a deep breath and do everything in one grand sweep? Or one room at a time? Which is the top priority? What will you keep? What will you replace? How much of the work can you do yourself? Where can you cut down on cost? Find the right combination of functionality and style – with a delightful touch of elegance – to reflect your special taste and personality.

1. Location: Ascertain where you want to mount your fan in the room. Typically, a fan is mounted in the very center of the ceiling, but for larger rooms, it is advised that two fans should be installed for better air flow.

2. Room Dimensions: For small bedrooms, closets, kitchens, etc, a 30 “fan should be installed; for medium rooms and larger kitchens, a 42″ Fan is suitable and for large rooms, family room and dining rooms, a 52 ” fan is suggested.

3. Quality: Two characteristics of a quality fan are a good motor and negligible humming sound. Selecting a good quality fan is essential not only for better air flow, but also to prevent unnecessary increase in your electricity bill.

There are many different tribes in the region, and each has its own distinct style for creating rugs. Despite the differences, all Berber rugs are constructed of wool and made by hand. Some of the tribes are known for intricate designs and brightly colored rugs, while other tribes create a more crude, neutral style.

Genuine Berber rugs are made entirely from wool. The wool may be sheared from the live sheep or removed as a full hide from a deceased sheep. The two methods of collection result in two different looking rugs. A genuine Berber rug never uses synthetic materials, such as polyester.

Berber rugs vary, depending on the region the artisan is from. Groups that settled in the Atlas Mountains wove thick rugs with a heavy pile, while those who journeyed through the desert wove a lightweight rug with a flat weave. The rugs were used for sleeping mats, bed covers, and even saddle blankets.

One particularly beautiful style of rug is the Beni Ourain. This very distinct type of rug uses live wool. This means the sheep is sheared, rather than taking the wool from the hide of a dead animal. Beni Ourain has a shaggy pile, giving it its unique appearance. The shaggy pile is very comfortable and exceptionally warm.

Berber rugs may be mostly neutral, with a few dark accents on the natural wool color, or brightly colored. Colored rugs are dyed from natural sources, blue from the indigo flower, red from poppies, and yellow from saffron.

Berber rugs are a great compliment to many styles of home decor. The handcrafted style looks particularly nice when combined with a spare, modern aesthetic. These pieces, while collectible, are sturdy and made to withstand use. If you are looking for something more ornamental, consider a hendiras. These are rectangular squares, made in the same fashion as Berber rugs. They can be 100 percent wool, or have silk or linen woven in as well. They are often used as outerwear, wrapped around the shoulders, but make beautiful bed spreads, throws and wall hangings.

Beni Ourain and other Berber rugs may seem expensive, but it is important to realize that these rugs are made by hand. The craftspeople who make these rugs learned the tradition from their family, in a process that dates back to the earliest ages. The rugs, while utilitarian, are also works of art. No two rugs are alike. While you can, and should, use the rug as intended, it is a work of art.

Where Do Berber Rugs Come From?

The timeline of rugs show that different techniques of weaving were developed to create rugs that were expertly designed by artists referring to their specific country. As time passed, rugs began to be made in larger quantities out of wool harvested from local sheep that were native to the area of the local artist. This process made it possible to produce quality rugs for the masses.

Moroccan Rugs

Moroccan rugs have traditionally been hand-woven by indigenous tribal people for centuries using only the finest materials. Moroccan Berber Rugs specifically tend to use flat-woven, knotted, and pile techniques in multifunctional ways. During the early years, they were used as bed coverings, mats, burial shrouds, self-adornment, saddle blankets, and of course as rugs. Weavers passed on their works and designs to other artists in order to keep the tradition alive. These same designs can be seen in today's rugs that are made by Beni Ourain artisans.

Beni Ourain Rugs

The Ben Ourain tribes are a group of Berber people who are from the Atlas Mountain area of Morocco. There are seventeen different tribes that herd goats and sheep, moving them from one grazing area high in the mountains to another as needed. They use the high quality wool from their animals to make amazing rugs that have truly fixed the test of time. All of their work is handwoven by artists who take great pride in their art. The skill is passed on from mothers to daughters and has been for generations.

Rug Designs

These specialty rugs are designed around the lives of the weavers. They act as a record of life's experiences and contain themes such as religious beliefs, births, nature, and fertility. Lucky symbols are often added to the rug to ward off evil. Each rug is part of the history of the country and presents where the weaver lives. Beni Ourain rugs are based around a calming, simple design that usually has black and brown lines and abstract patterns. Each one is unique because they are handmade by different artisans, each with their own design process.

People around the world enjoy the superior quality of these rugs, making them very popular for today's homeowners who are looking for that special piece to finish off a room. Their natural white and ivory background works well with any décor, both traditional and modern. These rugs are made to last and can be passed from one generation to the next when properly taken care of. Owning a Beni Ourain Moroccan Berber Rug is like owning a piece of art that can be appreciated for many years.

TEXTILES FIBERS

Natural Fibers

Wool, Silk, Cotton, Linen, Ramite, Jute.

Man-Made and Chemical Fibers

Rayon, Acetate, Nylon, Polyester.

Choosing well your upholstery fabric:

First of all, make sure your fabric passes the USA NFPA . (National Fire Protection Association)

Some of the fabric stores do not have a tag with a clear description of the fabric content. Make sure to ask for it. I recommend to get your fabrics from your drapery-upholstery store. There, you will find a great selection of fabrics with the proper information. These fabrics are not necessarily expensive, but the quality and exclusivity of these materials and designs, make the investment worth enough.

So, how to select the right fabrics?

Make a board with all the fabric options for your project. Play with colors, textures and patterns. You will be amazed of how a simple fabric mixture can produce such a big change! You can create a mix of fabric combination with velvets, linens and satins, those, together, are now the most chic and sophisticated look!

Observe and see how they look together, make changes according to your criteria and preference. But do not decide anything yet. When you think you have everything selected, leave it, if you can wait for a few hours or even for the next day, it would be even better. I can guarantee you will make some changes, even if you were absolutely sure about it. The point is, you are now training your eye, so, when you see your design-scheme selected, you will find something to move or exchange, and doing that, you have finished with your fabric selection!

For drapery fabrics, a quick way to know if that particular material works, is to touch it. Feel the fabric and see if it is easy to fold, a too thick material, no matter how beautiful it might be, it will not work, mainly when you are looking for a set of functional draperies that will be totally covering your window. A too thick fabric could be a problem with the function of the curtain, which it can produce issues when opening and closing your draperies. When the fabric is too thin, you need to confirm with your source if the material can be used for drapery treatment, providing a proper drapability and covering your privacy needs.

There are several types of drapery linings as well: Standard cotton linings, black out linings, interlining and English bumping. Interlining and English bumping are used to apply an extra “body” to your draperies.

Patterns

Choose your favorite pattern and enjoy it! There are now so many options! But please do not forget to scale your pattern according to the measure of your windows. A large patterns will not fit in small or medium windows, small patterns are not really good for large or two stories windows.

Fabrics, colors and textures can beautifully define the mood and personality in every room. Be smart and choose well, obtain your fabric information and make sure it will work for the project you are working on, especially for upholstery use. You can find a great selection of fabrics from your drapery-upholstery store along with free design services.

Happy Designing!

When I first started up my own Painting and Decorating business I did not have any customers, I started to get myself known by printing my own flyers and posting them around town. Starting up your own business could be the biggest step of your working life. OK so you are a painter and decorator and you want to be your own boss, find jobs and complete to a professional standard and then get paid when you finish the work.

What's the best way to start to find the jobs? Well I started with posting out some flyers for Painting and Decorating and a few people would reply, now if you have a computer and a printer that's all you need to get started. Have a look online to find out what flyers look good and then read there sales copy and see if you can improve on it to get a sale and then print up say 250 flyers to get you started.

Now you need to choose where to post the flyers, I would choose a fairly well to do area, say middle class where the owners have a good job and would pay a local decorator to decorate their home. Fold the flyers nicely and post all 250 to start with, make a note of the roads you have posted to so you know where you are with your target postings.

Repeat this procedure until you get some decorating jobs and you can give a customer a decorating quote, you will get results from this but you will have to try different flyers and see what works best.

You need to get yourself a good website, just have a look at a few websites and see if you can write yours any better. It's not that expensive, you can make your own website with “WordPress” which is free and host it with a popular name, there are lots of out there. And when your customers look at your flyers they can also look online and see pictures of some of the Painting and Decorating jobs that you have done, it gives them a bit more confidence in trusting you. Now when you get a phone call after handing out your flyers you need to know how you are going deal with and sell your services to your new customers.

Be friendly and helpful and polite, make an appointment that will suite your customer and make sure you look smart when you go to your appointment, take a color chart and a note pad and pen and your digital camera, have a good look at the condition of the surfaces that need to be painted. Work out what you will need to do to get a good job done and how much materials you will need. I have found that this is a very good way to get new customers but you must persist and keep going until you succeed, be like a good Painter and Decorator and do a good job and do not over charge customers and then they will recommend you to their friends. Remember that you are a local Painter and Decorator and customers need to find a decorator so that they can get a decorating quote that they are happy with.
