The countryside attractiveness of the natural stone named travertine appeals to many. Basically, travertine is a kind of limestone that is born around mineral springs. Earthy tones are several and the finishes may be honed, polished or tumbled, according to preferences. Where will you use them? Beside floors, put them on pathways, countertops and backsplashes, around bathroom showers too. They shine everywhere.

Since travertine may not be the best choice for all, investigate four points in favor and four against, allowing you to make informed decisions.

What is great about travertine like Machu Picchu Travertine Tile

An exclusive pattern

An age old building stone, travertine is graceful and smart, some varieties resembling marble and granite too. Cream and beige, gold and brown, gray and red, get what you fancy, all created by Mother Nature.

A robust stone that lasts very long

High traffic areas do not bother the sturdy travertine that tolerates wet areas, not prone to moisture. Scratching and chipping are not issues either. The weathering of time renders travertine like Caramel Travertine even more attractive.

Travertine is both recycled and biodegrades

A natural stone that understands no manufacture, travertine could be salvaged if you wish from an old structure.

Travertine allows for refurbishing

Avoid cleaners with salt and vinegar because they would leave indelible stains.

A weighty stone
Travertine being heavy, installations take longer. Transport costs would be higher. They would probably be used only on the first floor.

Do you fancy cold floors?

Travertine does not trap the heat and the result would be chilly floors on those winter mornings. Rugs would help visually too, including maintaining warmth. Tuscany Chateaux Travertine is a superb example.

Much has changed in the last few decades in almost every sector of life like with architectural designs and building materials, floor and wall surfaces and the fittings. Contemporary people want everything to be eye-catching as if part of a television show! In terms of colors, the bright and the lustrous are preferred. Some do opt for minimalist designs that contrast blacks and whites in a sterile setting.

Herringbone and chevron are quite similar and very popular. The difference is rectangles and angles. Beside architecture and tile designs, the herringbone pattern is found in jewelry, clothing, wallpaper and several others.

Floor and wall design options

Perhaps for centuries of years since the Middle Ages, floors were restricted in terms of patterns. The usual flooring was made up of cement and of a few fixed shades. The only alternatives were marble or other forms of natural stone that only the privileged class could afford. Wood also served for excellent flooring, especially in areas where it was found in quantitative quantity like in forested areas. Wooden floors continue to be loved, but natural wood is costly and prone to decay amidst water.

In love with designer options, it is only natural that a variety of patterns are artistically sketched on the tiles through technology. A variety of surfaces may be printed through inkjet technology like copies of cement, cloth, greenery, oceans, wood, and stone on porcelains. Such surface textures appear very real indeed and it is hard to tell the difference!

Among squares and rectangles, triangles and basketweave patterns and so many others, the herringbone design or the skeleton of the fish is very popular. Complex abstract designs are also in vogue like the natural appearance found on marble surfaces. Imitations of ethnic symbols like the different Asian and African cultures and their dresses and headgear, lamp, temple and building designs are markeded too.

The basic herringbone pattern is replicated in a great variety of shapes and designs, proportions and colors. The crisscrossing design is found in many forms and colors, on various materials in aesthetic shapes. The interiors specifically need to be rather glossy and environments that use marble look rather lavish. The herringbone or the crisscrossing pattern may be used on a variety of materials is preferred. Choices of colors are infinite, whether it is plain colors or a mosaic of shades and materials. Matte or glazed surface textures present another choice.

An abundance of flooring materials

Similar tile materials may be installed on floors and walls, although high traffic areas like business floors should go in for something durable like natural stone. Care needs to be taken to make sure that the sealing is done initially and repeated regularly if required. Wet and moisture-release areas would avoid natural wood and any porous materials that would gradually lead to decay. Wood can not be used in wet areas, though wood look porcelains would be fine.

What about blends of glass, metal, and stone to create exotic effects? Even glass tiles fill the interior with light and color! Natural stone mosaics too would harm the heart and amaze the vision with the play of colors and light and shade. The materials could be as light and breezy or dark and mysterious as desired.

The herringbone engineered wood flooring

The fishbone pattern created to perfection with sturdy wood like oak. The strips are fitted together to create that triangular effect. Genuine wood floors may be rather uncommon in view of the cost factor but some do swear by it in aristocratic homes. A few families always followed that noble heritage of wooden floors and will not give it up. Colors and shades could differ, depending upon the variety of wood being used, from almost whites to grains and browns, richly polished and insulating against heat and cold.

With a diversity of picturesque names and shades, the herringbone flooring tiles available online is mind-blowing! Choices would be infinitely complex indeed, but consensus must be reached by the family or office group. The trick is to select two or three designs and then set up borders or accents, blending or contrasting colors and designs for a rich effect.

Did you know that a centerpiece can be a generic item that is not only used for events or a dinner party? Centerpieces give the dining room a more interesting and homely atmosphere. Plus it can add to the decor of the room.

Before starting with the decoration, you should decide on whether to use a tablecloth or runner. Many people will choose a runner to protect the wooden furnishing from scratching and staining plus it looks modern and elegant. The tablecloth and runner also does not need to match the curtains but if a carpet is present, make sure that the color suits the carpet. Alternately, you can use contrasting colors such as black and white, yellow and red, or maybe purple and green.

Centerpieces can be more than just flowers and candles. They can also be a combination of decor items or something completely out of this world and abstract.

The item that will be used as the main focus should be in a different color than that of the tablecloth or runner. Try to avoid blending the same color decor items so that guests can actually see the distinctive decor elements. The only exception to this decor rule is the use of transparent glasses and vases.

A trend that is taking wedding venues by storm is the upside down wine glass containing an item of sentimental value and a candle placed on top. This centerpiece is placed on a dark plate that accentuates the glossiness of the wine glass. This should be done in sets of three for a wholesome look.

Filling a tumbler (a tall glass) halfway with beads in the color of your choice might seem generic. So try topping the bead filled glass with water and placing three of these tumblers on a reflective plate. This is a simple yet gorgeous centerpiece that will not take too much effort to construct.

Sometimes people travel to different parts of the world and tend to buy souvenirs such as a bottle of local gem stones. However, when you get home you realize that you do not have any use for these gem stones. Filling small mason jars with either a specific type of stone or mixing them could give the room a rustic appearance. You can either top the jar up with water or place a tea candle on top of the gems.

Modern furniture can be an artistic piece on its own but adding interesting centerpieces with a personal touch will give your house that homely touch.

Space is premium for people living in big cities. Big houses and flats are often way too expensive to own. So naturally, most of us have to get by with space constraints.

This however does not mean an end of the world if we know the art of interior designing. Yes, it can help us make small spaces look truly very spacious, which in turn, may make the tiny look big. For designing your interior, you should only trust an expert or a team of professionals with years of domain knowledge to do the needful job with perfection.

Even expert designers need to take some care when designing the interiors of small spaces, which include –

Keep it minimal

With small house, the mantra should be to keep it minimal. You can not afford to make the place look cluttered and clogged with an overload of belongings. Rather, the focus should be on to de-clutter the space and make it appear light, not heavy. When your space is less occupied, you can move or walk in properly and feel like living in a spacious setting. Why would you stuff the space with items when you know it can take up the same area you need for movement! This is why minimalism works, more so when you deal with space issues in the house.

Furniture with versatility in mind

Furniture does occupy a lot of space in the house. It often creates the visual sparks and elegance of the desired variety. More importantly, the big and bulky pieces not only stylize the area but give a feel of opulence. Sadly though, your small spaces will not allow the freedom to go full-hog with the furniture of choice. So, you have to go for versatile pieces that serve dual purposes together and that you can double up and fold up to economize the space perfectly.

Subtle use of glass items

Glass is a kind of material that reflects light and make spaces appear bigger than they actually are. This is why some homeowners use it aptly more often than not in order to get the claim of spacious rooms. Secondly, whatever glass items you have need to be placed strategically in order to deliver the results they are meant for. Never let them occupy areas in front of doors or near the window. You can also use paintings and wall units to get the same effect if you live in small spaces.

Use the colors sensibly

Nothing creates as much visual magic as colors do. If you knew how to harness their hues and shades, your small space would enliven beyond imagination. The best thing about colors is, their effect is no reliant on the shape, size and structure of a house. But yes, you should go with light and warm colors as they make spaces look bigger than they actually are. Plus, they can create a soothing effect in the room, help brighten up the mood and inspire creativity. You can expect a top interior designer to add some darker tones as and where needed to create a more playful appearance.

We, Indians, love opulence and drama in every possible theme. May it be our movies or our novels, we dig for everything grand and larger than life. But when it comes to enjoying a meal with folks, we prefer a soothing ambience with an easy-on-the-eyes setup. A meal is a time when we open our hearts to loved ones, no matter where we are. It serves as a bonding medium for generations to come together and exchange stories and experiences. Why settle for a drab table setting when the conversation is so interesting? So make every meal a wonderful experience by setting up a table. Regardless of what you are serving, let the table decorations add glory to every cuisine. Add drama to the table with little trinkets.

1. Chalk Out a Plan!

Before you take out all your cutlery and serveware, give your table 5 minutes. Observe your dining table and understand how it can act like the epicentre of the meal that you are hosting. Create a mental plan to ensure that every person feels comfortable with it. If you are hosting a soiree, then ensure that you have enough space on the table to place everything you want, without having to move things around at each course.

2. A Subtle Centerpiece

Every table describes a story! Plan out your table setting around a brilliantly curved centerpiece. Give your table a conversation starter by placing a centrepiece in the middle. If you have a huge dining table, then you can always go for two pieces. For a small-size table, you can go for a longer-than-usual centerpiece to save on surface area. You can play around with flowers, candles, lanterns, mason jars, and much more. For authentic Indian style setup, use tea lights and brass accessories wrapped in colorful strips of cloth. You can also place a long strip of a mirror in place of a table runner and top it with tea lights and wooden animal figurines.

3. Story of Crockery and Cutlery

Placement of cutlery and crockery plays a very important role. This not only nurtures table etiquettes but also helps you in maintaining a clean setup. Cultivate a habit of using separate plates for mains and bread or chapatti to ensure that the bread does not get soggy. Introduce table napkins to the whole setup to eliminate the possibility of accidental spillage. Dress up these napkins with eye-catching holders. You can also tie these napkins with dry bamboo grass or ribbons. When it comes to spoons and forks, always ensure that every plate is partnered with an adequate number. If you are serving Indian cuisines, then you need to place a couple of spoons beside a plate. In case of continental, place a set of forks, spoons and a knife. The type of crockery and cutlery you pick will itself make a big difference to your table setting. You can use authentic copper and brass plates and utensils to give an authentic Indian feel, or you can choose very colorful ceramic plates to give a bohemian personality to your dinner party. When it comes to cutlery and utensils, the choices are endless.

4. Little Shiny Trinkets

To maintain a theme on a table, you can introduce little trinkets. These trinkets should blend in the whole set up but also maintain distinct identities. You can have metal birds holding salt and pepper shakers or a thin stone slab with napkins placed under a glass goldfish.

5. Mismatched Table Settings

Sometimes the beauty is in not trying too hard! You can create a very easy relaxed yet chic table setting by mixing and matching a plethora of colors and design styles. This dash of color will show your individualism and will also create an easy going, fun mealtime.

6. For those Formal Dinners

Some dinners are very formal, for example, calling your or your spouse's boss for dinner or having your mother-in-law eat in your new home for the first time. We recommend that you keep the table settings at such times simple, timeless and elegant. For one, it will showcase you as a sophisticated host or hostess who has great taste and also if you keep it simple, you can achieve more without adding even more stress to yourself for this important occasion. We suggest you go with elegant white laze napkins, high-end dishware in classic pastel colors and some simple flowers for the centerpiece.

If you wish to bring together your family every night, even then try to dress up your dining table. As, humans, we crave for something new every day. Then why not give your eyes little trees every day in the form of creatively done dining tables. It can also act as a bonding exercise if you include your kids, siblings, mother, or any loved one in the decoration process.

March Moments

March Spring Cleaning Options

The dictionary has many definitions for the word “march”, much more than I ever thought possible. Here are a few: “to walk in a military manner with a regular measured tread; to force someone to walk somewhere quickly; a piece of music composed to accompaniment marching or with rhythmic character; a frontier or border between two countries”; and my favorite definition, “the third month of the year, in the northern hemisphere usually considered the first month of Spring.”

Here is a question, “What am I marching toward this month”? A simple answer is that I am marching toward the official end of winter and the hopeful beginning of spring. Another simple answer is that I am marching toward more daylight and my days filled with the warm tilt of our planet toward the sun. But my answer is so much more than these two thoughts. For me March is a long month to plan, to layout, to prepare for seeds to grow, for events to start to fill my calendar, for volunteering to explode in more areas than I could have done during the winter, for the opportunity to get outside and capture the beauty and essence of rebirth and reclamation and renewal with my pen and with my camera and with a closet or two.

What does the month of March mean for you?

“However many years she lived, Mary always felt that 'she should never forget that first morning when her garden began to grow'.”
Frances Hodgson Burnett, The Secret Garden

Last month I put out a daunting list of tasks to consider to help keep you busy and forward thinking while getting through the month of February. It is completely OK if you could not or chose not to tackle all of the top 5 activities on that list. To be perfectly honest, for me the starter garden was the thing that got pushed to the end of February. I take way to long to decide on my seeds of choice and that was pure procrastination on my part. If you were like me then I say let's get serious and make that starter veggie garden and flower garden the first item on our top 5 list for March. What I know for sure when it comes to my flower garden is that it must include flowers that attract butterflies, hummingbirds and ladybugs. How about you?

“Adopt the pace of nature: her secret is patience.”
Ralph Waldo Emerson

The 2nd activity on our top 5 list for March is to get outside as much as possible and start to pick up winter debris from the yard or designated garden area (s). This is actually a very relaxing activity for me because it allows me time to get reacquainted with my outdoor space. It allows me to enjoy a different angle of the sun and notice how the sunshine falls on my lawn and all around the house. At this time of year, I am able to get outside a lot more than I could have even one month ago so I took the time I have and draw up a plan for when it will be time to transplant my flower seedlings into the grandeur of the front yard landscape. Here are some helpful ideas to get you excited for your garden this year.

Item three on our list is kind of a fun activity involving nothing more than a pen and paper. March ushers in bizarre and big and small holidays and family get togethers. Let's get those important dates penciled in on the calendar. For my family it means lots of births, weddings, anniversaries, along with whatever the month presents. March is always representing St. Patrick's Day and the start of daylight savings time and the start of a new season and sometimes Easter and Passover. This year Passover and Easter both fall out in April so here are some celebration ideas to keep your spirits up:

On March 3 it is Caregiver Appreciation Day. Why not show some love to all those that help with your little ones or your older relatives?

On March 6 it is National Frozen Food Day. Take a break from cooking and let your favorite frozen food and the oven be your helper.

On March 8 or the 2nd Tuesday of the month it is Popcorn Lover's Day. I see a great dessert in your future with this celebration.

On March 14 it is National Pi Day. At the middle school where I used to work, every year the staff would provide small fruit pies to give to the kids during lunch. So cute, so fun, so cool.

On March 21 it is Credit Card Reduction Day. What professional / financial organizer would not love to take part in this day?

On March 30 it is Take a Walk in the Park Day. Need I say more?

John Maeda, The Laws of Simplicity: Design, Technology, Business, Life

Item four is to pick any room in the house. It could be an entire room or just a portion of a larger room that you were expecting to redesign into something else. Need some ideas to get you started? I used to start with my children's rooms by simply rearranging the furniture. That one act was enough to freshen up the space. If I was really ambitious I would get them to help me with the clothes portion because they were excited to think about all the new spring / summer clothes they would get to choose. The rule around here is if we bring something in that is going to stay for a long while then we take something out that we no longer need or want or use. Your room pick does not have to be a big room, it could just be a window seating area that you have always wanted to try or a room that needs your attention and care like a laundry room or the space under the stairs or a half bathroom or otherwise your linen closet.

And once again we have so quickly arrived at item 5. Clean your bathroom. Now, when I say this I do not mean the daily or weekly cleaning and touch up that is always a good way to stay on top of the mess and germs but I really really deep clean this space. I have had to climb a ladder and reach up to the borders around the ceiling of the bathroom to scrub away the grime that has collected there. I literally scrubbed that room from top to bottom. This allowed me to change lightbulbs, freshen paint, scrub trim, clean on top of the window shade and the shower rod and the top of the tub rim. It's amazing what needs attention when you take a different angle of approach. There are tips and tricks for everything, including deep cleaning a bathroom.

March tend to feel like such a long month. Enjoy your 31 days of progress and discovery. The last 10/11 days of the month are a whole new season to enjoy!

Dinner Table Decoration: How Do You Do It?

Have you ever been the host of a dinner party and had absolutely no idea how to decorate the table? Maybe you have not, but sure you want to try something new and eye-catching that your guests can compliment you on.

Not all dinner parties have to include a tablecloth but there has to be something protecting your table from greasy stains and falling cutlery. You can either choose to place mats underneath each plate or runners on each side of the table. Your best bet would be the tablecloth or placemats so that guests are not disturbed by the constant moving of the runner.

Choose a color theme that looks appealing to you. If it is not a specific occasion and is just a family dinner on a Sunday, then you can play around with different color ideas. The color of the tablecloth should be different to the color of the serviettes or napkins except the napkin is placed on the plate.

If you are going to put a centerpiece in the middle of the table it then it should be the focal point of the dinner table. On many dinner tables, the food will be placed in the center for everyone to serve themselves. If this is the type of setup you are planning on having then perhaps the centerpiece is for another day.

Centrepieces should not cover the face of the person opposite you. It either needs to be higher than the heads of the guests or only 20cm from the surface of the table. It could get uncomfortable for your guests to speak and not see the person's face that they are speaking to.

Only have the necessary amount of plates and cutlery set on the table. Without, the dish requires the person to use a specific utensil, rather have only one knife, one fork and one spoon.

Two glasses per person is enough for what they may drink for the evening. Usually a wine glass and a tumbler are placed for each person in case they want to drink juice as well as wine.

Decorative plastic under plates can be placed underneath the dinner plate to add to the décor colors. White plates are common as are white tablecloths so these decorative plates could bring a fresh colorful appearance to the dinner table.

Do not overdo the dinner table decoration with too many candles or clutter. Modern furniture such as dining sets are stylish and decorative in their own right so you do not want to crow these dinner tables with too many flowers, candles or overall decoration. Keep it simple, clean and elegant.
