Maybe it was sheer pessimism that kept everyone at bay in 2016. It is time to dive back in now. The New Year is a fortnight old and nothing like Brexit or Trump has happened yet. And maybe such things will not happen in 2017!
Start with a thorough clean
DIY is inspiring enough and so much is possible. Get into the spring-cleaning fever. Clean whatever can be reached except the ceiling and the attic may. Carpets, furniture, silver and copper, doors and windows, the wardrobe, and use the right cleaning materials. See how everything changes for the better and the New Year looks and feels so good now.
Install exquisite wallpaper or decals
Get rid of those blank spaces on the walls. Expensive paintings are not really needed. Wallpaper or decals would do well enough. Spruce up the walls with scenes from nature, industry, the supernatural and mysticism, music, art, whatever. Do not overdo it, though.
Change the lighting effects
Some fancy lighting fixtures would bring the magic back into the nights when a lot of action happens. The days are spent in laborious professionalism. Make the nights livelier with a glass chandelier perhaps, or kaleidoscopic lighting in designated living room corners.
And so much more
Those aging cabinets could do with some color changes. Each room would have cabinets of some type or the other. Start with the bathroom and get a nice vanity. The kitchen cabinet too could do with a change. The living room and bedroom could have a cabinet makeover too. Exchange bargains with companies that work with used furniture is a possibility.
Green, blue and yellow is some of the exciting new color nuances. If the home is still stuck with grays and browns, it is time to make a change. Curtains, carpets, walls and floors could be transformed according to available budgets. Go so far and no further.
The brick allure continues to haunt! Consider a brick facade to the home, smaller or larger as seen appropriate. That will require some expense without anyone in the family can do a DIY job.
Take a good look outdoors at the surrounding greenery. What adjustments would be possible out there? Add a few more mesmerizing plants, sometimes? Can the rock garden be spruced up if it already exists or one established? A little pond with a few goldfish would be a hit with the kids and add to the garden allure. A kids' pool? The cleaning would extend to the garden spaces too. Just do it.
